“Robot Dreams” was one of the nominees for the 2024 Oscar in the category of Best Animated Film. Although it didn’t win the statuette, it has won the hearts of critics and fans: what is it all about and why is everyone talking about Pablo Berger’s film?
What is “Robot Dreams” (“My Robot Friend”)?
Dog is a lonely dog who lives in New York in the 80s and one day decides to build a robot to have a friend. They immediately become inseparable until, one summer evening, the dog is forced to abandon his companion on the beach.
Beyond what many might consider a simple premise, deep themes such as friendship, affection, the loss of a loved one and the fragility of relationships are tackled.
The film was directed by Spanish Pablo Berger.
‘Robot Dreams’ excites critics and fans: this is how they rate it
Since its premiere, the film has received critical acclaim. This became even more apparent at the 2024 Oscars, as it was one of the films competing in the Best Animated Feature category (although the award went to Hayao Miyazaki’s The Heron Boy).
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, for example, described it as a “masterpiece” on his Twitter account last September.
Rotten Tomatoes, for its part, describes My Robot Friend as “both heartbreaking and heartwarming” and “what a great cartoon it is.” On the site, the film has a 97 percent approval rating from expert critics, while audiences rated it at 88 percent.
Where to watch the movie ‘Robot Dreams’?
The film premiered in Spanish cinemas in December 2023, but arrived in Mexico on March 8. It can currently be found in cinemas. However, American audiences will have to wait a few more weeks to enjoy the film, as it won’t hit theaters until May 31.
So far there is no information about its possible arrival on streaming services.
Is ‘Robot Dreams’ a children’s movie?
The film has no age restrictions for the audience. From its trailer, ‘My Robot Friend’ announces that anyone can enjoy it.
Some parents or caregivers may want to consider the fact that it is almost silent (it has no dialogue, but there is a soundtrack) before taking minors to the cinema to see it.
The fact that it deals with themes like friendship, love and breakup ensures that adults can enjoy it too.
‘Robot Dreams’ is based on a comic book
The 2024 Oscar nominee is not entirely original, it is inspired by Sara Varon’s work of the same title. Although many have classified her work as a comic book, it is actually a graphic novel illustrated by herself.
The book ‘My Robot Friend’ tells the same story as the film, although some changes between the two are evident.
