What is it about?
Married to Ivano, Delia, mother of three children, lived in Rome in the second half of the 1940s. The city was then divided between the hope born of liberation and the material difficulties that had just begun. Faced with an authoritarian and abusive husband, Delia finds comfort only in her friend Marisa, with whom she shares an ease and intimate confidence. Their gloomy routine comes to an end in the spring, when the whole family prepares to celebrate the imminent engagement of their eldest daughter, Marcela. But the arrival of a mysterious letter turns everything upside down, prompting Delia to find the courage to imagine a better future, not just for herself.
From film to social phenomenon
It’s a phenomenon film in Italy and it’s finally coming to France. It still remains tomorrow (C’è ancora domani in VO) exceeded 5 million in its country and became a real social phenomenon. The feature film written, directed and performed by Paola Corteles has really made headlines.
“The film’s release coincided with a case of femicide, the killing of a young woman by her partner, an incident that sparked a great debate everywhere – in the media, in homes – about the severity of patriarchal violence in the country.summary French cultureIn the column dedicated to the phenomenon caused by the film. Teachers took their students to see the film, grandmothers took their grandchildren, the film stayed in theaters for months, it was widely embraced by politicians and associations, and Paola Cortés herself was much asked to speak about her feminist commitment.“
Challenging the weight of patriarchy with the codes of cinema
Like Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which, by the way, had a theme of patriarchy, Tomorrow Again deals with this issue dramatically, but with the addition of a fantasy form.
“It resembles – always a little gloomy – the story of certain children’s stories, but on the contrary, it is a fairly ordinary story about an ordinary Italian family from the second half of the 1940s. explains Paola Cortelezi in her note of intent.
Dramatic stories told with the desire to smile
A huge slap in the face before leaving, as if nothing had happened. He continues. I had this image in mind and the desire to portray through Delia the women I imagined, inspired by my grandmothers stories; dramatic stories told with the desire to smile; Stories of hard life, shared by all in the courtyard of the building. In the public square, joy and sorrow always went hand in hand.
These were stories of ordinary women who did not make history and accepted a life of violence because it was like that and not otherwise, without question. existed. It still exists, sometimes.” she adds.
A film at the crossroads of genres
It Still Remains Tomorrow has become a real popular success in Italy, although it is quite a demanding film with cinephile references. For example, black and white echoes neorealism. Paola Cortelez also voices the musical and combines different musical styles, multiplying breaks and unexpected effects.
For the French public, there is still an opportunity tomorrow to discover or rediscover great actors like Valerio Mastandria as her husband Ivan. Emanuela Fanelli (Marissa, Delia’s best friend) and Romana Maggiora Vergano (Marcella, the head of the couple). But above all, Paola Cortelez, who carries this film and brings its brilliance.
There’s Still Tomorrow hits theaters this Wednesday, March 13, 2024.
