Actor Dev Patel’s first performance, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, the action film Monkey Man was presented at the SXSW festival to critical acclaim. Will the feature film — the trailer of which can be seen above — do better than John Wick?
Ape Man action takes place in modern India. A man recently released from prison, nicknamed “The Kid”, struggles to find his place in a world dominated by the greed of business leaders and, conversely, the erosion of spiritual values. The latter then embarks on a quest to get revenge on those who killed his mother and sent him to prison.
Dev Patel plays against Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dulipala, Pitobash and Brahim Chabbi, and is also the fight coordinator. The latter notably worked with Jackie Chan, Marc Dacasco and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

A theatrical release is possible thanks to Jordan Peele
Co-written by Dev Patel, John Kohl and Paul Angunavela, the thriller announced in 2018 was acquired by Netflix in 2021 for around $30 million (or twice the film’s budget). But the streaming giant isn’t doing anything about it. According to the American site The real worldThe Hindu nationalist right-wing portrayal of the character has Netflix worried about its future relationship with India. So the company preferred to return the film to the producers.
Jordan Peele (Get Out, Nope) then had a chance to see the film. Fascinated by Dev Patel’s vision, he believes The Monkey Man deserves a theatrical release. He then bought this ‘John Wick in Mumbai’ through his company Monkeypaw Productions and decided to release it in theaters with Universal Pictures.
