A Purge: What is the correct order and where to watch the franchise?

Created by director James DeMonaco, The Purge is a franchise that takes a firm stand against our cultural obsession with violence and our tendency to confuse justice with revenge. The human instinct for violence needs to be satisfied, even if for a brief moment.

With this reasoning, the director created a plot set in the United States where a national holiday called “Crime Night” (from the English The Purge, meaning purge) is established, which lasts 12 hours in which all crimes are permitted.

It’s a standard “chase, attack, revenge” home invasion narrative, but it’s also accompanied by an appreciable sense of candid social commentary. If not for one inconvenient fact, The Purge could have easily gone down in cinematic history as a pretty decent horror thriller. Unfortunately, the Hunger Games franchise came sooner… and better.

With a budget of $3 million, The Purge delivered more than $90 million at the worldwide box office. Due to the success, the repercussions and the joy of the producers, the bet did not stop there. There were four sequels and a TV series, which earned investors a few extra dollars.

Like the entire saga, there is always a question about the release and chronological order of the films. To help choose the best way, the has two ways:

Release order of “The Purge” films

In a dark future, the United States sees violence and crime rates plummet after adopting a simple but controversial policy: Purge Day. On that day, for 12 hours, all crime is permitted and all emergency services are suspended .

In the first production, the story follows on a personal level businessman James Sandin (Ethan Hawke), who works at a security company, and his mansion is invaded during the night of the Purge.

With the 12-hour purge of lawlessness sanctioned, the second film in the series shows the consequences of the government’s action and features police sergeant Leo Barnes’ (Frank Grillo) quest for revenge against his son’s killers.

The narrative takes a turn when Barnes encounters four defenseless strangers who have been trapped on the street during the night. To be outside is to be dead.

Two years after her son’s murder, Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), now head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), fights to ensure her survival amid the chaos of the night of the purge.

A candidate for president and the main target to be eliminated, the senator opposes it and promises to end the 12-hour demonstration for permitted crimes as soon as she is elected. In the third film, the challenge is to show the impact of this policy of suspending laws across the country.

Now, eyes turn to the beginning of it all and the film tries to answer what Purge Day is. Who planned it? How did it happen?

In the development of the fourth film’s narrative, a new political party takes control of the government. They conduct a social experiment with the goal of reducing the crime rate on Staten Island, an island near Manhattan, New York.

Although The Purge proved to be a successful franchise in theaters, the spin-off series failed to gain a large audience on TV and was canceled after just 2 seasons due to low ratings.

The series is not available on any streaming or digital platforms.

In the fifth film of the saga, all the rules are broken when a lawless sect of marauders decides that the Purge will not end at dawn. Now they are determined to make Purge Day last forever.

In this sequel, The Frontier threatens to continue enabling crimes by placing the United States completely out of control and in a state of war.
