A video player playing Jaws on a computer screen, a small typo in the dinosaur’s name, Richard Keel’s voice replaced by Roger Carell in the French version, or even the four letters that represent the bases of DNA depicted on the predator’s head. …
As with many blockbusters, the first Jurassic Park title, directed by Steven Spielberg in 1993, is full of little details that are certainly anecdotal in terms of the script, but juicy enough for movie fans who can digest them. .
To that end, the park’s office of corrupt computer scientist Dennis Nedry, who is actually plotting against John Hammond to steal a dinosaur embryo, is the actual cave of Ali Baba. Literally full of post-its, stickers or figurines, his workspace (which we recommend you check out in detail to discover new little easter eggs) also includes a photo of a historical figure, not just any!
Oppenheimer in Jurassic Park!
As you can see if you hit pause at 59 minutes 46 seconds into the film, when Spielberg’s camera zooms in on him, it’s Robert Oppenheimer, the inventor of the atomic bomb, who was featured elsewhere in Christopher’s latest feature film. Nolan, who just won an Oscar.
It’s a rather surprising detail, especially when we note that it is accompanied by two posts: one showing a sketch of an atomic explosion, the other with the words “The beginning of the baby boom” (“The beginning of the baby boom”).
What exactly does this easter egg mean for Dennis Neder’s character and the Jurassic Park plot? Why did Spielberg deliberately choose to place it here and leave the image out?
theories
Some would say that, like Oppenheimer, John Hammond’s scientists revolutionized science to create a truly terrifying and potentially uncontrollable invention. Others claim that Dennis Neder is preparing to “blow up” the entire structure of the park by stealing “little dinosaurs”.
A few internet theorists go so far as to claim that in the film and like Oppenheimer, Dennis Nedry has become somewhat of a “destroyer of worlds”.
What do you think it means to have this photo on the character’s desk?
