With over 12 million views in the first week of the show Netflix, The Gentlemen is a new success for the American platform. The Guy Ritchie series marks the return of the British director, known for his gangster films Scams, Crimes and Botany and Snatch, among others.
For his 8-episode featurette, which he created, wrote, directed and produced, Guy Ritchie was inspired by his own film. Gentlemen To expand this world and thus develop a new story and new characters.
Rated 4.3 out of 5 by AlloCiné viewers, The Gentlemen tells the story of Eddie Horniman (Theo James), an aristocrat who unexpectedly inherits his father’s vast fortune before discovering that he is part of a veritable cannabis empire.
Dangerous British organized crime figures want their piece of the pie in his business, and Eddie tries to take them to his own game, but the latter begins to develop a taste for crime.
Awesome first date
In addition to running his business, Eddie Horniman also has to take care of his eccentric family, including his completely eccentric and sometimes dangerous brother, Eddie. The latter is played by Daniel Ings (Sex Education), who makes a strong impression in the chicken suit from the first episode of The Gentlemen.
And it was in this outfit that he first met Guy Ritchie, as he explained in an interview. GQ :
“I went on set and they put me in a chicken costume to go and show what it was like, and I was going to meet him for the first time. So they took me to his trailer, knocked on the door, the door. It opens and this mass of incense smoke comes out.”
Guy Ritchie was playing his guitar in a kind of fog, and Daniel Ings stood in front of him before saying: “Has anyone ordered a huge cock?”. In English, this is the term “rooster”which also means “b*te” slang.
The actor thought that the director got the joke wrong when he saw his face. But Guy Ritchie just looked him up and down and said: “You look good, son“.
Total improvisation in a chicken costume
In a Guy Ritchie-approved chicken costume, Daniel Ings was able to pull off his crazy streak at the end of the first episode, in which he has to dance and talk like a chicken to clear his debt to a gangster who wants to humiliate him. But the actor had to go without nets as most of the scene is improvised!
“At first it was more of a silly, fun and silly scene, but the audience had to sympathize with Freddie”Daniel Ings explained,“Because if you don’t care about him, you don’t understand why Eddie does everything he does to protect his brother.”.
Therefore, the scene took a different course, with less lightness and great discomfort, although the people who witnessed the scene died laughing:
“Every time I walked on set, everyone was laughing because it was just crazy. But once we were shooting, I think there was a general anxiety about it because we didn’t really know where we were going. We knew where we were going. It started and where it ended, But we just didn’t know what was going on in between.
It was quite revealing, so I think Theo and Kaya in particular were embarrassed for me. But it was a positive experience because we found the right tone. If I make a complete fool of myself, we’ve probably done what we set out to do.”
