The Hollywood Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) has ratified new contracts for voice actors working in television animation. They have been approved by over 95% of the industry and create new protections around the use of artificial intelligence.
The new rules will be in effect until June 30, 2026. They include a requirement for producers to obtain an actor’s consent before using their name as a suggestion to create an AI-generated voice.
Again according to the new contracts “the term voice actor applies only to human beings”. The contracts also outline voice actors’ rights regarding the use of their digital replicas by movie studios and require producers to notify and negotiate with the union whenever they use technology-generated voices.
For the union, the approval of the rules “represents a significant step in expanding AI protections”. The contracts also establish a series of salary adjustments, starting with a 7% increase dated July 1, 2023, for which actors will receive retroactive payments. This will be followed by a 4% increase on July 1 this year and a 3.5% increase the following year.
The announcement comes after SAG-AFTRA reported in early 2024 that it had reached a deal with speech generation company AI Replica Studios. This negotiation aimed to secure a way to “safely” license voice actors’ digital voice replicas. The information comes from Dedicate onself.
