US will have three weeks to provide ‘guarantees’
The High Court of Justice in London postponed this Tuesday (26th) the extradition to the United States of Julian Assange, founder of WikiLeaks, accepting a final appeal against the provision.
With the decision of the British authorities, Washington will have three weeks to provide “guarantees” on the issue. Had the UK refused, the 52-year-old Australian could have been extradited.
The United States wants Assange to stand trial in the country for the publication of numerous secret military and diplomatic documents in 2010, mainly linked to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
After Assange racked up several legal defeats in recent times, the judges said the Australian had “a real prospect of success” in three of the nine pleas he appealed.
“Before making a final decision on the application for leave to appeal, we will give the defendant the opportunity to provide assurances. If they are not provided, we will grant leave to appeal without a further hearing. Otherwise, we will give the parties the opportunity to present further arguments before to make a final decision,” two judges wrote.
Assange has been imprisoned in a maximum security penitentiary in the English capital since 2019. He did not appear in court, so much so that the result was published online.
If he suffers another setback in this latest attempt to avoid extradition, the WikiLeaks founder will have exhausted all available resources in the UK. US President Joe Biden is under pressure to abandon the case brought by his predecessor, Republican Donald Trump.
In North America, Assange runs the risk of being sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for having disclosed approximately 700,000 confidential documents. .
