Nintendo confirms layoffs in the testing team

The decision may have affected more than 100 employees

Summary

Nintendo announced a restructuring of its testing department, which involved cutting outsourced workers. More than 100 employees are believed to have been affected.

After websites claimed earlier this year that the Switch’s successor would be delayed until 2025, Nintendo reported that its testing team is undergoing a restructuring, which will involve cutting some outsourced employees as well as creation of “a significant number of new full-time jobs”.

“For all the jobs that are closing, contract staffing agencies, with support [da Nintendo of America]will offer severance packages and provide assistance during the transition.”Nintendo said in a statement sent to Kotaku from a company spokesperson. “To the contractors who will be leaving us, we are extremely grateful for the important contributions you have made to our business and express our sincere thanks for your hard work and service to Nintendo.”

According to the employees concerned, the restructuring occurs because Nintendo is going through a period of crisis “calm” in its testing department, with employees saying there are no major games made by its studios for release in the near term and that none of them have tested the Switch’s successor.

The official number of people affected by the layoff is unknown, but four former and current Nintendo employees told Kotaku that more than 100 workers may have been affected and that roles converted to full-time jobs will be removed from the testing team.

With this, Nintendo joins the team of companies making layoffs in 2024, joining Sony, Microsoft, and Sega.
