This legendary duel is at the top of Netflix, with the sequel hitting theaters this week

A coincidence of the calendar or a well-thought-out strategy by the Netflix platform? While the blockbuster Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom hits theaters this Wednesday, April 3, the prequel, Godzilla vs. Kong is currently at the top of the viewing rankings on the Netflix platform.

An avalanche of special effects

A few surprises aside, the title reveals what you might expect from such a project, namely a muscular clash between two iconic movie monsters. The first, King Kong, first appeared on screens in 1933 by Marianne Cooper and Ernest B. in Shoedsak’s film. The second comes straight from Japan. His first appearance dates back to 1954 in Ishiro Honda’s film.

This isn’t the first time the two fictional creatures have met on the big screen. Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees in 2003 and Alien vs. Predator in 2004 were already there.

In the face of this controversy, it is recommended to turn off your brain and not ask yourself too many questions. The film weaves together several intrigues set in different parts of the world, all punctuated – to our greatest delight – by impressive scenes. Avalanche – or overdose, your choice – guaranteed special effects.

Box office success

The cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, star of Stranger Things, along with Alexander SkarsgÄrd, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza Gonzalez, Kyle Chandler and Lance Reddick in the shoes of the director of the mysterious company Monarch.

Godzilla vs. Kong was particularly hampered in 2021 due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic. In the United States, the film was released theatrically, but also directly on the HBO Max streaming platform.

Despite this unusual release plan, the blockbuster managed to collect no less than 470 million dollars worldwide – for a budget of 200 million. The studio didn’t need anything else to go ahead with what’s currently in theaters.
