The MonsterVerse multimedia franchise can be considered a success with the public. Produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, the MonsterVerse film franchise currently has five films that have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide.
For those who don’t know yet, MonsterVerse features a shared fictional universe centered around the monsters Godzilla and King Kong. In addition to the films, there are also two streaming series, distributed by Netflix and Apple TV+.
But do specialized critics appreciate the films of this franchise? With that being said, we’ve decided to list the films in the MonsterVerse series from worst to best. As a criterion we used the scores attributed to the films by the main film review aggregators and sites specializing in cinema.
Monsterverse: From Worst Movie to Best
The sequel to Godzilla (2014), “Godzilla II: King of the Monsters”, is the film with the worst critical reception within the MonsterVerse series. The film, which is the third in chronological order of the saga, received overall mixed reviews.
Furthermore, the film had a disappointing performance at the box office. The opera grossed $387.3 million worldwide, but the production budget was between $170 and 200 million.

The fifth film in the MonsterVerse series, sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), directed by Adam Wingard. The performance towards specialized critics was not the best: the film received mixed reviews from critics in general.
However, in the first three days of its release in US theaters, the film grossed $80 million at the box office.

Bringing the two monsters together for the first time in the MonsterVerse, “Godzilla vs. Kong” is the fourth film in Legendary’s shared universe. Directed by Adam Wingard, the film received generally positive reviews.
Additionally, the film surprised at the box office, as its release occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was the eighth highest-grossing film of 2021, grossing $470 million worldwide, against a production budget of $155–200 million.

The beginning of the saga was marked by considerable financial success: the film grossed $529 million worldwide, far exceeding the production budget of $160 million. “Godzilla” thus inaugurated the MonsterVerse.
Overall, critics received the film positively, especially praising the special effects and Bryan Cranston’s performance.

The first place on the list goes to the King Kong solo film. “Skull Island” received generally positive reviews, mostly aimed at the special effects. The film was also nominated for an Oscar in the Best Special Effects category at the 90th ceremony.
Furthermore, the film was also a success at the box office. With a budget of $185 million, the film grossed $568 million worldwide.
