OJ Simpson: from player and actor to murder suspect

Double murder trial

On June 12, 1994, OJ’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her boyfriend Ron Goldman were found dead outside their home in Brentwood.

Simpson had pleaded guilty to a domestic violence incident involving Brown. Therefore, he became an immediate suspect and was formally charged.

The case gained worldwide fame, being followed by more than 95 million people, with the trial being called “The Trial of the Century.” He was tried for months, declared innocent and ended up being acquitted in 1995, a decision considered controversial and contested in the following decades.

The great coverage by American broadcasters has generated several productions, such as “OJ: Made in America”, which won the Oscar for best documentary in 2017.

In 1997, he was convicted of assault in a civil suit brought by the Goldman family. Simpson paid approximately $33 million (R$168.03 million, in current direct conversion) to relatives of Brown’s boyfriend.

The former player and actor was also arrested for robbery and remained in prison for almost nine years until his release in 2017.
