Inspector Humphrey Goodman will be back on the job soon! The BBC has just revealed that Murders in Paradise, its flagship detective series, will be given the rights to a spin-off called Beyond Paradise, hosted by Chris Marshall.
The actor, who played the lead character in seasons 2 to 6 of the parent series before being replaced by Ardal O’Hanlon, will therefore reprise his role in this new iteration, which follows his return to his homeland.
For Diederik Santer, creative director of BritBox, the production company behind the series, making a Killing in Paradise spin-off was “evidence“. “Familiarity is essential” he said, “And this is done through spin-offs on a character or a location well known to the audience.“
With 11 seasons and a twelfth already in the pipeline, Meurtres au Paradis has been a huge success since launching in 2011 on both France 2 and the BBC. In 2021, it was the most-watched foreign series, all channels combined, averaging 4.78 million viewers in France for its 10th season. In England, the 11th season of Meurtres au Paradis drew an average of 7.52 viewers when it was released earlier this year.
Therefore, it is not surprising that the producers are trying to expand the world of the detective series through a spin-off of a character already well known to the audience.
While waiting for the arrival of Beyond Paradise, you can watch all episodes of Murders in Paradise on the Salto streaming platform.
