Padilha says there will be a proposal for a deadline to close Perse

The Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, said on Monday that the government will present a proposal setting a deadline to end the Perse program, created during the pandemic to support, among others, the events and catering sectors, with benefits tax.

“This guarantees a process of finalization of this program,” he said in an interview with journalists after meeting with the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad. “And the proposal now is that we have a deadline to expire and a definition of the maximum impact on revenues, on public finances that this program will have.”

According to Padilha, the idea is to bring the project to a vote in the House this week. Subsequently, the head of government of the Chamber of Deputies, MP José Guimarães (PT-CE), stated in an interview with journalists before the meeting with Haddad and other leaders of Congress that an agreement on the issue will be reached and that the vote on the measure will take place on Tuesday.

As reported by Reuters, an agreement practically already reached by the government with congressional leaders limits the total cost of the program to 15 billion reais until 2027, but if all resources are spent in just one year, the program will be stopped. According to Padilha, the program will have an impact of around 5 billion reais this year.

The conclusion of the project is, according to the minister, one of the government’s main points of negotiation with the National Congress at the moment.
