Today, April 23, is World Book Day. The date honors three authors: William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Garcicalaso de la Vega, who died on the same day, in 1616.
In addition to the tribute, the World Book Day It is a date chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate the book, encourage reading, honor the authors and reflect on their legal rights.
Education experts and teachers argue that World Book Day is an important date to reflect on the fact that the reading society is formed during childhood.
Who are the authors awarded on World Book Day?
1) William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Subsequently, in London, he became successful as a poet and, above all, as a playwright.
Shakespeare’s main books:
-
Cheese and guava
-
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
-
The domesticated shrew
-
Hamlet
-
Othello
2) Miguel de Cervantes

Miguel de Cervantes was born on the probable date of September 29, 1547, in the Spanish municipality of Alcalá de Henares. The sonnet A la muerte de la reina doña Isabel de Valois, published in 1569, was presumably his first poetic work. However, success only came in 1605, when the writer published El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha.
3) Garcicalaso de la Vega

He was born in Cusco, Peru, on April 12, 1539. His father was Spanish and his mother was the first cousin of Atahualpa, the last Inca emperor. In 1605, the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega published his first work in Portugal: La Florida del inca. History of the late Hernando de Soto, governor and captain general of the kingdom of Florida, and of other heroic Spanish and Indian knights. However, his best-known work is the Historia general del Perú.
460 years of Shakespeare
Today we also celebrate the 460th birthday of William Shakespeare, considered one of the most important writers who ever lived.
Given his relevance in world history and because he is a classical poet, SOMOS Literatura has promoted six literary adaptations of the collections Reencontro Literatura and Reencontro Infantil, by Edita Scipione. The aim of the project is to help educators and families introduce Shakespeare’s famous work to children and adolescents.
Laura Vecchioli do Prado, coordinator of the literature editorial team at SOMOS Educação, believes that reading Shakespeare’s works should be encouraged, even among beginning readers, which often represents a challenge, given the density of the texts.
“If prepared with rigor and quality, adaptations of classic works, such as Shakespeare’s books, play a fundamental role in the education of new readers. This resource establishes a greater connection between children and young people with the classics, allowing them to understand the relationship between past and present in a contextualized way”
