“Furiosa” is the prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road” which sees Anya Taylor-Joy in a younger version of the character previously played by Charlize Theron. The film, which also features Chris Hemsworth, Angus Sampson and Tom Burke among its cast, will deal with the fearless warrior’s origin story.
Without a doubt, this title is one of the most anticipated of 2024, especially since it comes 9 years after the last installment. Although the mastermind behind the franchise, George Miller, waited much longer to see the story on screen.
‘Furiosa’ Wasn’t Going to Be a Movie: That’s George Miller’s First Idea
In a recent interview with ‘Total Film’, producer Doug Mitchell revealed surprising details about the ‘Furiosa’ movie.
According to Mitchell, the story of ‘Furiosa’ was ‘ready’ for more than a decade: ‘Furiosa was ready, story-wise, 15 years ago. And it’s been percolating, as things do in George’s brain, ever since.”
In this sense, the script for “Furiosa” was completed before the shooting of “Mad Max: Fury Road”. “We had already finished the Furiosa script before we shot Fury Road,” Miller said in the article.
But perhaps most surprisingly, the character’s prequel was originally conceived as an anime project, titled “The Peach.” It would be directed by Mahiro Maeda, known for his work on the 90s classic “Neon Genesis Evangelion” at Studio Ghibli and one of the short films “The Animatrix”.
The movie “Furiosa” took 78 days to shoot
In the aforementioned interview, Doug Mitchell also talked about one of the film’s most ambitious moments: a sequence that lasted just 15 minutes on screen, but required 78 days of shooting and the daily participation of nearly 200 stunt actors.
The sequence, known during production as ‘Stairway to Nowhere’, marks a turning point for Furiosa. The moment is so important to the character that it was the subject of much discussion between Anya Taylor-Joy and George Miller.
“George and I had great conversations about why that particular scene was so big. It’s because you see a build-up of skills during a battle, and that’s very important to understand how resourceful Furiosa is, but also her courage. “It’s the longest sequence any of us have ever shot,” commented the “Furiosa” actress.
