The success of a film is not always measured by its quality. A new example is provided by Rebel Moon, Part 2: The Slasher, the second part of Zack Snyder’s signature diptych.
Already at the end of last year, the first part of the film failed to convince Netflix subscribers, who ranked it among the worst films of the American filmmaker with an average of 2.5 out of 5 (2974 ratings recorded on AlloCiné).
The second part of the film seems to be even worse, the film has an average audience rating of 2.3 out of 5 out of 575 votes (it is now the lowest rating in the director’s filmography, along with Army of the Dead). Rebel Moon 2’s excellent start seems to offset the criticism, but this apparent success should still be taken into account.
A simple facade of success?
During its first week of operation, the film is among the top 10 most viewed films on the platform in 82 countries. Rebel Moon takes first place in France, Germany, South Africa and especially in Turkey. The first part of Rebel Moon takes the third place in this world ranking.
But the beginning of the film is still disappointing. Despite the 44 million hours watched by Netflix, the film shows 21.4 million views, down from the 23.5 million total sessions the first film had a week later. A disappointing score for such a production, reflecting the lack of interest from a portion of the first film’s audience for this sequel.

Zack Snyder’s new failure?
So none of this bodes very well for the future of the franchise, despite Zack Snyder’s desire to make five or six movies. In order to introduce the world to Netflix’s Star Wars, the first two Rebel Moons seem to have failed in their purpose.
Until the platform makes a decision, the director has already started new projects, including an animated series created in collaboration with a famous French studio. After his ouster from the DC Universe and the failure of his Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon franchises, will Zack Snyder be able to return to success one day?
