In 2021, while the second incarceration limited much of our journey, the Prime Video platform launched the series Eux – Them in its original version – a story from the 1950s about a black family that arrives in a predominantly white neighborhood. With a Jordan Peele-like style, creator Little Marvin brilliantly mixes racism and horror.
A surprising political context
This series has caused some concern due to its particularly violent sequences. One episode in particular involved the killing of a newborn baby. Internet users on social networks accused the series of “Traumatic porn” – a term that refers to the exploitation of real traumas experienced by the black community here for entertainment.
After three years, they return for a second season. This time a new environment, a new era and new characters. Little Marvin breaks away from the 1950s to move his plot to 1991 Los Angeles. This date is not accidental, because it refers to the lynching of Rodney King, a black man who was brutally killed by the police.
Lots of hints
Pictures of the murder were published and caused widespread unrest in 1992. It was in this climate that investigator Dawn Reeve discovered a woman’s body in her home. The inspector is convinced that it is the work of a serial killer and begins to chase him. But an evil presence begins to attack him and his family.
As in the first season, Little Marvin brings a dark and disturbing atmosphere to the story, which reproduces highly suggestive horror images. Among the classics that inspired this season 2, we think of Seven and The Silence of the Lambs – and this, from the first episode -, but also slashers like Halloween and Night Claws, always with a strong political subtext.
themSeason 2 is available on Prime Video.
