WHO warns against avian flu and consumption of fresh milk

The day before, the FDA, the American health surveillance agency, had declared that it had found fragments of the virus in one sample in five of raw milk sold in the country: a sign that the level of contagion is higher than was believed at the time.

According to the FDA and WHO, further testing confirmed that the pathogen is destroyed during the pasteurization process, which is when milk is heated to high temperatures. Therefore, both bodies recommend the consumption of pasteurized milk as safe.

“The virus detected in milk, as well as its potential role in transmission, is under investigation,” the WHO said.

The international body recommends that countries implement measures to control infections and reduce human exposure to birds and mammals potentially infected with influenza or other types of influenza viruses.

US authorities have introduced stricter control measures to contain the first known outbreak of H5N1 in dairy cows, which has spread to 33 herds in eight states. A Texas farmer was infected but had mild symptoms.
