Social media has been abuzz with praise for Netflix’s new miniseries, ‘Baby Reindeer’. The story revolves around Donny Dunn, a bartender with ambitions to become a famous comedian, who one day meets a woman named Martha at his workplace.
The disturbing reality behind ‘Baby Reindeer’: ‘Martha’ gave Donny gifts in real life
Although she initially seems interested in becoming friends with him, things take a dark turn when she starts harassing him at work and then through text messages, emails, and even on social media.
Richard Gadd, the actor who plays Donnie and is a producer on the Netflix series, lived firsthand the terrible experience of being harassed by a woman for over 4 years, which even affected others close to him and his family.
In the chapters, she reflects on her experiences with her hunter, from whom she prefers to protect her identity by calling Martha in “Baby Reindeer”.
At the beginning of the series, it is detailed that Gadd received 41,071 emails, 350 hours of voicemails, 744 tweets, 46 Facebook messages and 106 pages of letters. However, one aspect that the Netflix series didn’t show was that Martha gave Donnie some gifts.
The woman’s attitude towards the protagonist was a combination of aggression and affection, but what was more surprising was the fact that she gave him gifts while they were still in contact. According to Forbes magazine, Gad was given a toy reindeer, referring to his nickname and the title of the Netflix series, Baby Reindeer.
Among the other items she gave him were sleeping pills, a hat, boxer shorts and even a woolen doll. This whole situation led the victim to seek police intervention as he developed a genuine fear of Martha.
Although Gadd has been interviewed by various media outlets, he has not explained why he decided to leave Martha’s gifts out of the series and what exactly he did with them.
