‘The Asunta case’: What really happened to the girl’s parents? Rosario had a tragic end

The “Asunta case” has rekindled interest in the 2013 murder of Asunta Basterra in Spain. The youngest, originally from China, was adopted by a Spanish couple when she was just 1 year old, but her life ended tragically.

Although the Netflix series details the circumstances surrounding the crime, many are left with doubts about what really happened to Alfonso Basterra and Rosario Porto.

What happened to Asunta Basterra’s parents in real life?

Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra were sentenced in November 2015 to 18 years in prison for the murder of their adopted daughter, Asuda. Although both always denied killing her, the authorities remained steadfast in their decision.

Although the Netflix series doesn’t show it as such, a legend appears at the end of “The Asunta Case” that explains what happened to the girl’s parents after her conviction.

Alfonso Basterra continues to serve his sentence in Teixeiro prison. In 2017, he participated in the documentary “What the truth hides: The case of Asunta (Operación Nenúfar)”, by the same producers, and sent a letter to the creators. In his letter he once again defended his innocence and assured that when he regains his freedom he will disappear from the public eye.

On the other hand, Rosario Porto, Asuda’s mother, did not manage to survive her sentence. In 2020, Porto committed suicide in prison. The news of his suicide was an additional blow to an already tragic and shocking case. He had made other suicide attempts in the past.

Why does ‘The Asunta Affair’ end with a family photo? The creator of the Netflix series explains it

The creator of the series, Ramón Campos, in an interview with “Fotogramas”, explained why he decided to end the series with a photo of Asunta Basterra and her parents, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, happy and before the crime.

According to the producer of “The Asunta Case”, his intention was not to end the series saying “look, what monsters”: even though they did something horrible and that in the trial they were convicted of something horrible, he wanted to remember that when it all started It was a family that loved each other and had a lot of affection for their daughter.

Campos asked Rosario’s lawyer to allow him to enter his house to x-ray his family and check if the parents loved Asuda as the lawyers defended: “It’s true, all the elements in that house were dedicated to the girl. “.

“There was a moment when everything went wrong, but before this moment this family was happy, it was not a family that suffered for years and did p… in Asuda, no. Asunta became the protagonist of these unfortunate events when someone wanted to get her out of the way, but for many years they were happy,” added Ramón Campos.
