“Allison’s journey this year, while darker, is not about anger, it’s about pain.”
This article contains references to sexual assaults and spoilers for ‘The Umbrella Academy’ season 3.
The long-awaited third season of ‘The Umbrella Academy’, one of the most successful Netflix series, was released at the beginning of this month of June. It has been met with largely positive reviews from fans, who are reunited with the Hargreeves brothers as they take on Sparrow Academy, the Afterlife and, you know, the apocalypse.
But some fans aren’t too happy with Allison’s character development., also known as #3 or “The Rumor”. The series introduced us to Allison in the first season and showed us her ability to control other people’s actions by whispering “I heard a rumour…” (hence the nickname), however she decided not to use her powers and become a successful actress. The first season also established a ~questionable~ romantic history between Allison and Luther., who are brothers, although they are not related by blood. This storyline was eventually dropped in season 2 after many fans expressed their discontent with it.
However, in the last season, Allison attempts to use her powers to sexually assault Luther.. In episode 5, there is a scene where Luther rejects Allison’s romantic advances, to which she responds by saying, “I heard a rumor that you love me.” This causes Luther to get on top of Allison, even though he has made it clear that he doesn’t want to.
Many fans have argued that sexually assaulting her brother should not have been included in Allison’s story.. They think Allison’s assault scene in ‘The Umbrella Academy’ spoils her story. One viewer tweeted, “The writers of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ are going to hell for what they’ve done to Allison’s character story arc,” while another wrote, “I was all for supporting women’s mistakes when it started. Allison’s ‘villainess’ arc and then she goes and sexually assaults Luther. Which writer decided that was a good idea? It’s irredeemable.”

In an interview with Men’s Health, Steve Blackman (the creator of the series) addressed the controversial history of Allison. “I really love Allison’s story this season. And Emmy Raver-Lampman and I talk a lot about PTSD. If you follow the story, she ends up in the Jim Crow South in 1963. She’s voiceless. literally for a whole year. She can’t speak. And then when she gets her voice back, she’s not allowed to speak because she’s in a world of racism. So she meets a man who loves her, Ray Chestnut, and then she breaks up with him in the same way that she was separated from her daughter”.
“Allison’s journey this year, while darker, is not about anger, it’s about pain. She’s dealing with the loss of the two people she loved most in the world, and they don’t exist in the same timeline. She took the opportunity to come here to get her daughter back, and her daughter is no more.”
“So Emmy and I talked: How could this character lose control? Where do we find this character? Ultimately, I think she finds herself in the end, but she has a rocky road to get there.”
