One of the most talked about scenes in the first part of ‘Bridgerton’ season 3 is, without a doubt, the one in the carriage between Penelope and Colin. Although this moment seeks to be the culmination of years of romantic longing and tension between the characters, it caused divided opinion among fans, as many of them stated that they did not feel the chemistry between the actors.
However, a behind-the-scenes anecdote shows Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton’s commitment to the scene.
Warning: The ending of the first part of ‘Bridgerton’ season 3 will be discussed in detail below.
The actors of “Bridgerton” did not stop shooting the scene of the carriage
In several interviews, Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton have detailed what it was like to shoot that moment.
According to what they said, due to space limitations in the carriage, there was no room for a cameraman. Therefore, the production chose to install only one camera on the set, leaving the actors alone and with the director and crew observing and giving instructions from outside and through screens.
As a result, the actors did not listen when the director shouted “cut” and continued with the romantic scene until the director came to the carriage and said “What are you doing? I told them to stop!’
Speaking about what it was like to film the famous scene, Nicola told ‘The Today Show’ that they felt ’empowered’ by the ‘control’ they had at the time: ‘We knew what points we had to deal with [con el coordinador de intimidad] but it didn’t feel forced or choreographed. We thought, “I trust you, you trust me. Let’s do our best.”
As if that wasn’t enough, in numerous interviews and events, the actors behind Penelope and Colin have claimed that they “broke a piece of furniture” while filming their steamy scenes. However, they have limited themselves to mentioning that this is a track that appears in the second part of the third season of ‘Bridgerton’, without specifying which one.
Luke Newton improvised a detail of the carriage scene between Penelope and Colin
Another simple but remarkable detail of the fiery scene caught the attention of fans: when they arrive at Colin’s house, he carefully and lovingly sets Penelope up so that no one notices exactly what happened. When he adjusts her dress again, he uses his thumb, instead of the ones he probably used when he touched her.
On social networks, many fans have pointed out this gesture as gentlemanly, romantic and thoughtful. In response to audience backlash, the episode’s director, Andrew Ahn, acknowledged that it was Luke Newton’s improvisation and not his direction.
