The leader of the government in Congress, Randolfe Rodrigues (without party-AP), declared on Tuesday evening, the 28th, that “the government won” in the majority of vetoes, after the joint session of parliamentarians on Tuesday the 28th.
The statements came after Congress overrode President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s veto on the temporary release of prisoners from the semi-open regime and maintained former President Jair Bolsonaro’s veto on an article of the national security law on news false.
“The government retained six vetoes. The government was defeated with four vetoes. Six is greater than four,” Randolfe said. “These were expected results, which were in the program. The important thing is that we maintained the vetoes on the budget law and we maintained the vetoes on the budget guidelines law.”
The senator added: “In most of the vetoes, the government emerged victorious today.”
Regarding temporary exits, Randolfe argued that the government managed to postpone the vote twice, but acknowledged that the result reflects the position of the majority of Congress, including rank-and-file MPs.
“There is one consolation: the prisoners of January 8 will not be able to get out either. I think they will then explain their grounds about it,” he said.
Furthermore, the senator said that the government should not take the matter to the Federal Court: “No, no decision. Let’s move on, let’s move on to the next topics,” he replied after the questioning.
Regarding maintaining Bolsonaro’s veto on the fake news article, Randolfe said he intends to press the issue in a new bill in the Senate.
