“There are horror movies and scary movies” proudly proclaimed The Descent’s catchline on its poster. We can’t say it’s fake yet. Released here in 2005 and directed by British director Neil Marshall, revealed three years earlier by the excellent B-movie Dog Soldiers, this ferocious gem has left a lasting mark on the memory and retinas of horror fans.
Conceived as Underground Deliverance, the cave setting was ideal terrain for the director. “I thought it was a fantastic setting that hadn’t been done much in horror films, but it was perfect: horror films are often shot in the dark, and it doesn’t get any darker than that!” He confided at that time.
Tense and repeatedly testing your nerves, Marshall plays with the codes of the genre and the universal fear of the dark, while imbuing his film with a unique and, above all, perfectly claustrophobic atmosphere.
Carried at arm’s length (and desperate energy!) by a solid 100% female cast, Shauna MacDonald, Myanna Buring, Alex Reid and Natalie Jackson Mendoza star in this visceral work (in the most literal sense). deadline!) and especially sharp.
