This should make Lord of the Rings fans happy. A famous character from the books that never saw the light of day in Peter Jackson’s movies will finally make his big debut in Season 2 of the Prime Video series, Rings of Power. This is Tom Bombadil, played by Rory Kinnear, whose participation has already been announced.
At the time of Rory Kinnear’s casting announcement, it was not known which character he would play. Prime Video publishes the first photos of the actor on the set of the series:

“Boss, this is it.“
Who is Tom Bombadil?
In the works of JRR Tolkien, Tom Bombadil rescues Frodo and the other hobbits from many dangers. In Season 2, Bombadil meets The Stranger (Daniel Weyman) and his friends Pivelus Nori (Markela Cavenagh) and Poppy (Megan Richards) on a trip to Middle-earth East.
The stranger is implied to be Gandalf, and the Pyvelus are the nomadic ancestors of the hobbits. Tolkien was limited in his description of Bombadil, who is known as old, strong, but unable to take part in the battle against Sauron.
A character seen by the creators
“In our story, he travels to the lands of Rhone, which we learn were once Edenic, green and beautiful, but are now a kind of deadly wasteland.“, Jade Payne, co-creator of the series, explained to Vanity Fair.Tom went there to see what was going on during his various wanderings.“
He adds: “When he finally crosses paths with the stranger, it can be said that he feels a desire to try and prevent the destruction that has occurred there in his beloved lands of the West. He pushes the unknown to his limits, knowing that in the end he will protect all of the natural world he holds dear. So I’d say our Tom Bombadil is a bit more interventionist than in the books, but only about 5-10%.“
“It is fantastic and magical, bordering on ridiculous. Its design and function are linked to Norse myths and have deep roots in European fairy tales“, explains Patrick McKay, another co-creator of the series. Payne adds: “Tom is a kind of curiosity in this structure, because although he is darker, Tom Bombadil sings and says verses that could be nursery rhymes or poems for children. It somewhat contrasts with the tonal shift of the rest of the season and is a real point of light in a sea of darkness.“
Rings of Power Season 2 premieres August 29 on Prime Video.
