The Corinthians coach believes the draw was fair, but demands: “We must stop making mistakes”

Alvinegro reaches fourth consecutive match without a win and could return to the Brasileirão’s relegation zone in this round

The match between Atlético-GO and Corinthians, in the eighth round of the Brasileirão, had everything but a winner. San Paolo’s Alvinegro was counting on an inspired evening from Yuri Alberto to open a two-goal lead over their opponents, but made silly mistakes and conceded an equalizer in the 90th minute. The result was also considered fair by coach António Oliveira.

In the press conference, the Juventus coach considered the urgency of the Corinthians result as one of the factors behind the emotional imbalance in the 2-2 draw against Atlético-GO. António Oliveira also said that the “adventures” of the match motivated the final result.

“A match that we knew would be difficult, like all the others in the Brasileirão. A team in urgent need of points, in a stadium where Corinthians historically has difficulties. It was a match with several events and adventures that motivated the final result and it turned out to be a fair result”, and added:

“Even with us 2-0, the opponent had more ball and clear opportunities. From the moment there is a sending off, the game becomes completely distorted and the strategies change completely. Mistakes happen. But we absolutely have to stop making mistakes”, concluded Antonio.

The expulsion António Oliveira refers to is that of Gustavo Henrique, in the 33rd minute of the first half. The defender received his second yellow card when he gifted a sort of equalizer to Emiliano Rodriguez, when the attacker tried to deftly charge a defender. At that point the game was stopped and the referee punished the defender with a red card.

Gustavo Henrique was sent off when the match was 1-0 for Corinthians, who with difficulty maintained their victory until half-time. Yuri Alberto even increased the lead in the 16th minute of the second stage. But Atlético-GO’s reaction began four minutes later, with an own goal from defender Cacá following a cross. The equalizer came with a penalty kick from Shaylon at half-time, in the 90th minute.

Corinthian situation

Corinthians can return to Z-4 at the end of the eighth round of the Brasileirão. With 6 points, Alvinegro can be overtaken by Criciúma, who will face Atletico on Thursday (13), and by Cuiabá, Cruzeiro’s opponent, on the same day, at 7pm, in Mineirão.
