‘We already have a story in mind’: We know more about the next seasons of the year’s best series

A few weeks ago we learned about the renewal of several additional seasons of Shogun. The adaptation of James Clavell’s novel was developed as a one-season miniseries, but the series’ success eventually convinced FX to continue airing the show.

After adapting the entire book, the next seasons of Shogun will have to imagine an original story that will remain faithful to the works of the British writer. A challenge for which the two creators of the series, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, are preparing.

Seasons 2 and 3 are in development

Two screenwriters (husband in town) spoke to our colleagues The Hollywood Reporter The future of the program, in particular “Darker Head” for Season 2, which will therefore be a direct sequel to Season 1.

“There’s a lot of chaos, but creative chaos, and we’re currently working on ideas before we see what we’ll keep.” Rachel Kondo explained during this interview. “It’s both exciting and very stressful because obviously we’re moving into uncharted territory. We don’t have a battle plan yet, but we already have a story in mind.”

The next seasons of Shogun will not betray James Clavell’s novel

Two more seasons have been ordered, but the fictional story won’t go beyond Season 3, as Justin Marks confirmed: “Season 3 will be the real ending. We know where the story begins, how it ends, and who the characters are. We’re currently working on Season 2 to make sure we can connect those dots. Season 2 will be like most sequels. A darker chapter .”

Also in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Shogun lead actor (and producer) Hiroyuki Sanada was also excited about the sequel: “We don’t have a James Clavell novel anymore, but we’ve learned a lot from his mind and his taste in stories. His DNA is mixed with ours now, I think.”
