Amazon Prime Video has canceled the science fiction series “Night Sky”, with Academy Award winners Sissy Spacek (“Bloodline”) and JK Simmons (“Counterpart”).

The news comes a month and a half after the release of the eight episodes of the first season, which have received positive reviews but have not had a significant impact on the audience of the platform.

Despite that, “Night Sky” secured a place in series history after Prime Video teamed up with SES and Intelsat to stream the show’s first episode in space. The initiative marked the furthest distance from Earth a series has ever aired and made Prime Video the first streamer to deliver their content directly into space.

In the series, Spacek and Simmons play an elderly couple who, years ago, discovered a buried bunker in their backyard, which inexplicably leads to a strange desert planet. For decades they have kept the place a secret, using it to their advantage. But when an enigmatic young man (Chai Hansen, from “Shadowhunters”) materializes in that chamber, their peaceful existence is quickly disturbed, leading them to question the true meaning of that place.

The plot was developed by first-time screenwriter Holden Miller and was directed by Argentine Juan José Campanella (Oscar winner for “The Secret in Their Eyes”).

The looks and acting were the pinnacle, but the story, with a parallel plot about a mother and daughter in Argentina, could have easily reached its conclusion in eight episodes. However, the premiere was meant to be just the first of many seasons, which sadly won’t be produced.
