In 2017, Jeff Nichols looked through the eyes of segregationist America in the 1960s with Loving. Seven years later, he stayed at the same time, near Chicago, to tell the story of the birth and loss of the illusions of a biker gang.
Inspired by Danny Lyon’s photobook, The Bikeriders stars Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, Mike Feist and Michael Shannon. And for us, this is one of the best movies to come out in 2024. But does the audience think so too?
With an average rating of 3.5* out of 5 from 141 ratings, The Bikeriders is currently the second lowest rated film from its author (which is pretty good anyway). Midnight Special (3.4) ahead and Mud (4.1) quite far behind is his peak.
As for Austin Butler, we have to go back to May 2019 to find a lower-rated film (Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die, averaging 2.1), but it’s still worth noting that his last two feature films (Elvis and Dune 2) are over 4 .
Same observation for Jodie Comer, as this is her lowest rated film since Star Wars – The Rise of Skywalker (3 out of 5), in which she plays a very small role.
They liked it
tom_trailer (5 of 5): “The Bikeriders is a little gem of American cinema! Jeff Nichols’ impressive direction, the talent of his actors (Tom Hardy and Austin Butler move and explode on the screen) and photography elevate the theme of the film, the themes of which resonate. Each of us (a sense of belonging, social recognition, love , which we have towards others and ourselves. I left overwhelmed with emotions … to see one of the best films of 2024).
Garnierix (4 of 5): “It’s far from a ‘biker movie’. It’s more of a love movie. And so much a movie about friendship. There’s a lot of emotion. It’s also a movie with messages that we don’t really expect. The movie questions happiness. .”
Bikeriders won’t leave you indifferent, whether you’re a motorcycle enthusiast or not, and you won’t come out unscathed
Olivier (4 out of 5): “Once again Jeff Nichols delivers a little gem that combines tenderness and violence against a backdrop of gang warfare. The settings, the script and the whole sixties soundtrack (Animals, Shangri-Las, Aaron Neville…) is just perfect. So grab your Harleys and Go and see this Bikeriders will not leave you indifferent, whether you are into motorcycles or not, and you won’t come out unscathed.”
Selenium (4 of 5): “Tom Hardy remains a bad boy who is always solid, and Austin Butler completes his sex appeal with a reference to James Dean after The Lightning Class! Let’s not forget the sublime and divine Jodie Comer among them and above all the false intelligence. The geopolitical context, on the other hand, remains too much buried , which ends just before the return of the Vietmen, while the sixties remain undoubtedly the most exciting decade in the United States.”
Cool_92 (3.5 out of 5): “Success, both from the point of view of the director, the script and the actors. The photography is brilliant. The interpretation of Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy is above their peers. I am a little more mixed on the smoothness of the actors. Austin Butler The story is certainly a classic, but it is quite a beautiful moment in the middle of the movie on the way. Sons of Anarchy and free.”
They didn’t like it
22 out of 20 (2.5 out of 5): “I was very bored, with a few fairly regular micro naps. This is due to many extended monotonous passages where nothing interesting happens. The pace is very slow, it is clearly not an action film, and the motorcycles rarely go. The film is based more on their philosophy than on their journeys, in short , a film that really pays homage to the motorcycle culture of the time, but which suffers from a dull beat.
Despite the interesting cast, the movie is boring. A script that has just been tweaked with no depth
Surfeurfou974 (1.5 out of 5): “The trailer suggested a revenge sequence, a knife fight in the background of Judas Priest, honorable barrows. Instead, there is no musical background, we see that depression and beer drinkers, a small club of cowards and a typical toxic couple. Despite the brilliant performance of Tom Hardy and Austin Butler, It doesn’t make you laugh, it doesn’t make you cry… that’s why there was a movie room.
Azerty Vo2 (1 of 5): “Pure imitation of the mythical Wild team and also EasyRiderAll to the tune of Sons of Anarchy. Despite the interesting cast, the movie is boring. A script that has just been tweaked with no depth. As if this is a remake of the above-mentioned films.”
in total
The casting is the main selling point of The Bikeriders and it works, with both Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer and Austin Butler being the one exception to the above criticism.
However, the atmosphere and rhythm are debated: some are sensitive to what Jeff Nichols says there, while others admit to being bored with this film, which they see as less than its obvious influences.
And you ? What did you think of The Bikeriders?
