Scholz tells Milei that reforms should not threaten social cohesion

The Argentine president was received by the German Federal Chancellor on a limited visit. In a meeting, the leaders also discussed negotiations for a trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur countries. The German Federal Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, underlined during a short meeting this Sunday (23/06) with the President of Argentina, Javier Milei. the importance that the reforms undertaken in the South American country are socially compatible and preserve social cohesion, according to a statement released by the German government.

The ultraliberal Milei is currently trying to push through an intensive reform package in Argentina, which includes plans for a drastic reduction in the public sector and cuts in the education and cultural sectors. Many of Milei’s plans have sparked protests in the South American country.

According to the statement, Scholz “underlined that, in his opinion, social compatibility and the protection of social cohesion should be important benchmarks.”

The two leaders also addressed negotiations for a trade deal between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur countries and agreed that they must be concluded quickly, said the German government, which signaled its support for the entry of the Argentina in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), an issue also addressed.

Scholz and Milei also agreed on Russia’s war against Ukraine. The German government highlighted that both had recently attended the peace summit in Switzerland. “In today’s talks, both sides agreed that Russia has the opportunity to end the war of aggression against Ukraine in its hands,” the German government said.

The brief, hour-long working meeting was the Argentine president’s first meeting with a Social Democratic leader during a visit abroad, although it was not the usual Berlin reception for a foreign leader.

Initially the Argentine was going to receive a state reception, including military honors, but the original program was reduced to a short business meeting after – according to the German government – Milei refused to speak to the press together with Scholz.

This Saturday Milei was greeted with protests in Hamburg, where he reportedly received a gift from a neoliberal foundation that has ties to far-right politicians. Also this Sunday, in Berlin, there was a protest against Milei’s reforms.
