England, in a dramatic match, eliminates Slovakia and goes to the quarter-finals of the European Championships

A bicycle goal in the last game of regulation time, another in the first of extra time. Inglese 2-1 in a game that is prohibitive for those suffering from heart disease

It was dramatic, but England are still alive in the European Championship. This Sunday (30/6), at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, in the round of 16 of the European Championships, the English watched Slovakia eliminate them, losing 1-0, thanks to a goal from Schranz. But, in the 50th minute of the second half, in the last attack, Bellingham scored a great goal – half volley, half bicycle – taking the decision to extra time. And in the first attack of extra time, Kane, with a header, scored the goal that qualified the English team for the quarter-finals.

The English will face Switzerland (who eliminated Italy) next Saturday (6/7), in Stuttgart.

Slovakia is effective in the first half

The first half was surprising. Due to the many cards in the first 15 minutes (four, three of which were from England), the poor football of England in attack and the good work of Slovakia. This team started much better, creating the best chances, almost scoring with Haraslín and reaching 1-0 in the 25th minute, when Strelec played for Schranz to score the goal. Behind the scoreboard, the English started trying to put the ball on the ground and use their best technique. They put a lot of pressure, but they failed to score successfully. In any case, having 75% possession was useless: out of five shots on target at this stage, none were on target.

England in the lead. But no goals

After four minutes, Kane found Trippier free on the left and crossed for Foden to score. It was eventually disallowed for offside. But at least it was the offense’s first objective play of the game. But England failed badly. At nine, Bellingham misses a pass in midfield and Strelec almost scores, covering Pickford. Slovakia, with the ball, made good passes, while the English continued with a devastating possession, but without luck. At 30, Kane moved to the side. In the 35th minute Rice hits the post and Kane isolates on the return. It wasn’t the goalscorers’ day.

What a great goal, Bellingham!

When nothing indicated that England would win, the equaliser came after 50 minutes. A desperate throw-in into the box was guided by Guéhi, who deflected it towards Bellingham. Half bicycle kick, half volley, the Real Madrid beast left everything the same and, with his great goal, took the game to extra time. In time: it was the Englishman’s 15th shot on target. And the first was towards the goal and not out or towards the post.

In extra time

The final blow was too much for Slovakia. Extra time had just begun and, in the first minute, following a free kick in the box, Toney headed the ball to a free Kane, who headed it in, turning the game on its head. At half-time of the final 15 minutes of extra time, England manager Southgate removed Bellingham and Kane, reinforcing the defence. It took a lot of effort, but he maintained the lead. England 2-1. An embarrassment avoided. But Slovakia, although frustrated, leave the Euros stronger than when they entered. After all, they had a campaign worthy of applause.
