Warning, spoilers. Before continuing reading this article, it is recommended to watch the TV series “My Lady Jane”.
Number 2 in Prime Video’s top views, My Lady Jane is one of the platform’s latest successes. Somewhere between Bridgerton and Game of Thrones, this historical-fantasy drama from Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn (Supernatural, The Boys) is an epic adventure set in a medieval fantasy world amid impossible romance.
Adapted from the novel of the same name by Brodie Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodie Meadows, the eight-episode series is a modern take on the story of a real-life historical figure and novels depicting the historical life of Lady Jane Grey, infamously known as “The Queen”. of nine days”, with a disastrous fate.
This plot from the book does not appear in the adaptation of the TV series!
But in My Lady Jane, Jane Gray is the heroine who is treated to an epic adventure full of twists, courage, discovery, intrigue and magic. Fans loved the series, rated 3.9 out of 5 by AlloCiné viewers, but also the romance between Jane (Emily Bader) and her husband Guilford (Edward Blumel).
The public may consider themselves lucky, because this novel could have been tainted by a scandalous plot! Indeed, the show’s creators decided not to adapt one of the original novel’s narrative arcs, namely that Jane also has romantic feelings for… King Edward, who is none other than her cousin.
Yes, this purely fictional incestuous relationship is depicted in the book. Even in her marriage to Guilford, Jane still has feelings for Edward, whom she considers her first love. The book says that this type of incest story was not taboo at the time, but it was still embarrassing and inappropriate.
If you’ve already finished the Prime Video series, you’ll notice that this plot is missing. And so much better. If the creators of the series had kept this plot in the series, it would have been awkward, but it would also have spoiled the romance between Jane and Guilford.
While My Lady Jane borrows some elements from Game of Thrones — especially the medieval fantasy with the Aethels, people who can turn into animals — the show doesn’t lean toward incest, which is pretty common in HBO series.
Because one of the interesting plots of My Lady Jane is the pursuit of the Aethians, the creatures are considered “distinct monsters to be hunted and discriminated against.” And Jane, very progressive, will do anything to help them as queen and pass the law in their favor.
And this plot also involves King Edward, who turns out to be an Ethiel and who becomes close to another Ethiel man with whom he has a romantic relationship at the end of the first season. We really didn’t need a storyline about Jane and Edward having an incestuous relationship.
My Lady Jane is available on Prime Video.
