After 40 years of production in Spain, the VW Polo sold in Europe will be imported from South Africa; The decision does not affect the Brazilian model
The current Volkswagen Polo is no longer produced in Europe. The model, produced at the Navarra plant (Spain) since 1984, has come off the assembly lines of the European unit to make room for the brand’s electric cars. From now on, Polos sold in the Old Continent will be imported from South Africa.
In addition to the country of vuvuzelas, the Volkswagen Polo is also produced in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) and Taubaté (SP), both in Brazil. The last Polo unit produced in Spain was the entry-level Life version, with a 1.0 TSI engine with 95 hp, a 5-speed manual transmission and blue paintwork. In total, the brand has produced 8,422,161 units of the sedan in 40 years of production.

The decision does not affect in any way the Polo produced in Brazil, which is also sold in Latin American countries. The leader in passenger car sales in Brazil in 2023, the Polo is fighting for the overall title in the national market this year and has already registered 57,864 registrations in the first half of 2024.
It is worth noting that the South African factory in the city of Kariega was already responsible for producing the Polo GTI sold in Europe. Away from Brazil, the sporty version features a 2.0 TSI engine with 207 hp, a 7-speed DSG gearbox, as well as improvements in trim and appearance.

To avoid the problems of energy rationing in the region and the supply of the model in Europe, Volkswagen has invested in a power plant that produces up to 16 megawatts and maintains uninterrupted production 24 hours a day.

With the end of production of the model in the city of Pamplona, Spain, the old assembly line will be prepared for the launch of two electric models in 2026, a Skoda and a Volkswagen, which will coexist with the T-Cross and the Taigo, also produced in the Spanish plant.
