F-1: Verstappen regrets qualifying mistake: “Wrong place, wrong time”

The Dutchman finished fourth in the British GP qualifying race in a session marked by a breakaway

Max Verstappen have a complicated weekend Formula 1 British GPseeing his main rivals – McLaren and Mercedes – faster and leaving their car behind. 616 seconds behind pole-sitter George Russell, the Red Bull Dutchman qualified fourth and regretted his escape in Q1.

The reigning three-time world champion spun at Copse and hit the gravel, damaging the floor of his RB20 and compromising his championship position. Unlike Sergio Perez, who had left the session moments earlier after running away at the same corner, Verstappen managed to keep his car moving and rejoined the track.

“I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We started late in Q1 and we didn’t expect it to rain. The guys in front had already cleared that area and I saw the rain coming. I lifted my foot and ran through the gravel,” he described.

The Dutchman also appreciated the team’s work to minimize losses with the session underway and celebrated fourth place, which puts the driver in an attacking position for this Sunday’s race (7).

“The team did a good job trying to minimize the damage. Being in fourth position I’m happy. Just a little unlucky. Honestly I would have liked to be on pole and we could have fought for it, but now we need to have an offensive race,” he said.

“I think it will be very competitive between the teams. They are going well this weekend and they are running a lot. For me it was hit or miss. We made changes and the car improved in qualifying, but we couldn’t get the pace,” he concluded.
