73 years ago Palmeiras eliminated Vasco and reached the final of the Copa Rio


Alviverde held out a 0-0 draw at the Maracanã after winning the first leg 2-1 to secure a place in this season’s World Cup final




An important chapter in the history of Palmeiras turns 73 this Thursday (15). After all, it was on July 15, 1951 that Verdão reached the final of the Copa Rio, the first club tournament in World Cup format.

On that occasion, Alviverde held off the mighty Vasco, the basis of the Brazilian team that came second in the 1950 World Cup, and ended 0-0 at the Maracanã. After winning the first leg 2-1 in Sao Paulo, they reached the final of the tournament, organized at the time by the CBD (Brazilian Sports Confederation), now CBF.

Palmeiras then faced Juventus (ITA) in the final, both matches played at the Maracanã. In the first leg, on July 18, Verdão won 1-0, with goals from Rodrigues. Four days later, in the second match, Alviverde tied 2-2 – goals from Richard and Liminha. And, before the eyes of 82,892 people, the first world champion team was crowned. Palmeiras’ team in the final was: Fábio; Salvador, Giovenale, Túlio and Luiz Vila; Dema Lima, Ponce de Leon (Riccardo) and Liminha; Jair Rosa Pinto and Rodrigues. Coach: Ventura Cambon.

About Copa Rio

The Copa Rio was officially named by CBD International Champions Club Tournament and had two consecutive editions, both in Brazil. The following year, in 1952, the champion was Fluminense.

In August 2014, FIFA recognized the 1951 championship as a world championship, through the entity’s president, Joseph Blatter. Three months later, in November, the then Brazilian Minister of Sports, Aldo Rebelo, received an official document from the highest governing body of football confirming the status of the Copa Rio as the first club world championship in history.
