Five Latin American governments issued a joint statement on Friday expressing concern over the “harassment and persecution” of the Venezuelan opposition ahead of the July 28 elections.
The statement by the governments of Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Costa Rica and Guatemala calls for “an immediate cessation of harassment, persecution and repression.”
The Venezuelan opposition has repeatedly denounced arrests and other actions by authorities that the opposition says are aimed at harming its campaign and preventing fair elections. The government denies the accusations.
