Former Deputy Slaps Hospital Computer in DF After Friend Suffers Unattended Stroke

Raad Massouh was recorded arguing with staff at Santa Helena Hospital, who said he could not provide care without paying a R$118,000 deposit.

The former deputy Federal DistrictRaad Massouh, was recorded in the early hours of Thursday 25th, in the middle of an argument at the Santa Helena hospital, in Asa Norte of Brasilia. In the images, the former MP appears arguing with employees and hitting a computer monitor. They were discussing the hospitalization of Antônio Melo, 76, who had just suffered a cerebrovascular accident (CVA).

In an interview with StateRaad said the hospital was preventing Antônio from being treated at the unit due to non-payment. The employees were demanding R$118,000 for a 10-day stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital rooms.

He says he was awakened by a phone call from Antônio’s family at 00:40 on Thursday. They asked him to help them after the old man had suffered the accident. Antônio, also known as seo Melo, owns a music venue in Brazlândia and promotes events in the administrative regions of DF.

Before that, the man’s relatives had sought help at the Sobradinho Regional Hospital (HRS). Since the service was time-consuming, they turned to private healthcare.

So he went to the hospital and asked the employees if they charged a deposit of about R$ 11,800 for each day of hospitalization. “I want one of you to tell me which bank will make a Pix at 1:00 in the morning for R$ 110,000. Is there any credit card that pays R$ 110,000 for an hour like that?” he asked the professionals, while his Melo was on a stretcher, wearing hospital gowns.

“He’s going to die,” the former MP shouted, pointing at his friend. At one point in the recording, Raad can be seen slapping the screen of one of the hospital’s computers, which was on the reception desk in front of him. He says he offered to pay for the equipment, but the staff said that wouldn’t be necessary.

“I apologized and they didn’t want to file a police report. [boletim de ocorrência]”, said the former MP. After the video ended, Raad says that the nurses at Santa Helena placed an IV on Antônio. Then, the hospital board convened and approved the hospitalization of the man who, the following morning, would be transferred to a unit of another hospital network, where he is currently, according to the politician.

The video was recorded by one of Melo’s grandchildren, who asked Raad for permission to share it on social media. In response to the backlash from the recording, the hospital said it provided immediate assistance.

“The patient was examined immediately upon arrival at the hospital, underwent further examinations, received a diagnosis, was treated for the diagnosis received and continues to be treated and monitored,” the unit said. “Only after treatment, diagnosis and after receiving the necessary care, the family received an estimated bill because the patient needs to continue hospital care. The treatment process and the submission of bills were handled separately,” the statement said.
