Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU! After Iron Man, which legendary character will he portray?

Thunder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Robert Downey Jr. will return to the saga! The 59-year-old actor was on stage at San Diego Comic Con to announce his big comeback, five years after bowing out in Avengers Endgame.

Avengers 5 New Title!

With the voice of its big man Kevin Feige, Marvel dynamited the event by announcing the official title of the next Avengers for the first time. The film, which is expected to release on April 29, 2026, will finally be called Judgment Day.

Originally, the work was supposed to be called Kang Dynasty, but the conviction of Jonathan Majors for domestic violence forced Marvel to revise its plans.

This title is not chosen by chance, because it is Robert Downey Jr. who will play Dr. Doom (in French, Dr. Doom), the new big bad guy in the saga. So it looks like Kang is finally out of the equation and it won’t be remade.

Kevin Feige also confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo will direct the next two Avengers movies, Judgment Day and Secret Wars (in theaters May 5, 2027). In these 2 films, Robert Downey Jr. will appear as Doctor Doom and the Fantastic 4 will play an important role.

From superhero to supervillain!

After Iron Man, the actor goes to the dark side this time playing one of the most iconic supervillains of the Marvel franchise. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, Dr. Doom first appeared in Fantastic Four #5 in July 1962. He has something in common with Tony Stark, he is a megalomaniacal scientific genius.

Marvel spared no expense in announcing the good news. Doctor Doom’s army appeared on the scene, all masked. Then a man walked into the audience, took off his hat and mask and held out his hands: it was Robert Downey Jr.! Obviously, the crowd went crazy the moment the actor appeared.

After years of making his mark on the MCU as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer, thus opening a new chapter in his fruitful collaboration with Marvel Studios.

After defeating Thanos, seeing him as the new supervillain of the saga is quite ironic and exciting. Will this be enough to spark public interest in the MCU? I’ll let you discuss.
