An audiovisual database that creates and archives “digital doubles” using artificial intelligence. It may sound like the beginning of a Hollywood science fiction film, but it is reality. The initiative, called CAA Vault, was created by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), one of the largest talent agencies in the world.
According to the company, the goal is to protect the images and voices of its customers, creating a new market for virtual artists. In collaboration with Clear Angle Studios, which specializes in 3D scanning and visual effects for Marvel or Disney films, CAA has opened studios in London, England, and Los Angeles, USA, where it is possible to create and establish a digital double.
First, the original actor is given a full body scan in 17 different types of lighting. Then, cameras capture certain body movements so that the AI can understand how the person’s muscles work and how they walk, for example.
The third step involves capturing all the details of the face on a machine nicknamed Dorothy, with hundreds of cameras and flashes that, during two sessions, take about 700 photos every three seconds of 76 different facial expressions. The fourth and final phase takes place in a recording studio, where the artist must pronounce hundreds of pre-established phrases into a microphone that provide a wide range of sounds that can be used to create entire monologues, even in other languages.
By creating a digital double, the CAA Vault customer owns all rights to their image and voice. Nothing can be used without your permission or payment of a pre-agreed fee.
It is important to understand that this is an authentic and original performance by the actor, so we do not consider the project as a replacement for any of our artists. Think of it as a way to enhance or expand the work of the talents involved. And, if there is misuse, we have a way to remove it and a legal argument to prove the similarity of the actions.
