The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will begin this Wednesday (28), with the opening ceremony taking place at 3:00 p.m. (Brasilia-DF time). The closing will take place on September 8. After one of the best cycles in several sports, Brazil arrives in France looking to reach the 400-medal mark in the history of the mega sporting event.
In the history of the Paralympic Games, which had their first edition in Rome in 1960, Brazil has a total of 109 golds, 132 silvers and 132 bronzes, for a total of 373 medals. There are therefore 27 podiums missing for the desired number 400. The Brazilian delegation will be the largest for an edition of the Paralympics outside the country, with 280 athletes in total. There are 255 people with disabilities, 19 guide athletes (18 in athletics and one in triathlon), three bowlers, two blind soccer goalkeepers and a rowing coxswain.
At Rio-2016 and Tokyo-2020, the delegation won the most medals in single editions, with 72 in each. However, in Japan, there were 22 gold medals, a record that surpasses that of London 2012, when Brazil won 21. At home, the country reached the highest place on the podium 14 times.
At the Paris 2024 Games, Brazil will be represented in 20 of the 22 sports: athletics, badminton, bocce, canoeing, cycling, wheelchair fencing, blind football, goalball, equestrian, weightlifting, judo, swimming, rowing, wheelchair tennis, taekwondo, table tennis, archery, shooting, triathlon and sitting volleyball. There simply will be no Brazilian athletes in action in wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.
Historical cycle
The Brazilian delegation arrives in the French capital with one of the best cycles in its history in different modalities, accumulating great results in the World Championships. In athletics, which is the sport with the highest number of athletes called up to Paris with 71 athletes and 18 leading athletes, the country has achieved historic campaigns in the 2023 and 2024 World Championships. This year, Brazil has won the highest number of gold medals in the history of the competition, with 19 gold medals.
Swimming is the second largest country in terms of number of athletes in Paris, with 37 athletes in total. Brazilian athletes had a historic season at the 2022 Madeira World Cup, finishing third in the medal table at the event, with 19 gold, 10 silver and 24 bronze. In last year’s edition, Brazil won 16 gold, 11 silver and 19 bronze.

Impressive results also in paracanoe, which this year won six medals at the World Championships in Szeged, Hungary. In total there were two golds, two silvers and two bronzes, setting a new record for the Brazilian team. In Paris, eight athletes will represent the country in this sport.
In sitting volleyball, Brazil will have 12 male athletes and 12 female athletes, making it the third sport with the most competitors at the Paralympics. And the women arrive as reigning world champions, having won the title in Bosnia, in 2022.
