BRASÍLIA – The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula Silva issued a statement this Thursday, 5, in which it was announced that the Minister of Human Rights, Silvio Almeida, was summoned to provide explanations regarding the allegations of having committed harassment. The note from the Communication Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic states that Almeida was summoned this evening to provide clarifications to the Prime Minister of the Comptroller General of the Union (CGU), Vinicius de Carvalho, and the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messia.
In the note, Secom claims that the Silvio Almeida has stated that it will send a letter to the CGU and the Public Prosecutor asking for clarifications on the case. The Ethics Commission of the Presidency of the Republic has also decided to open an investigation.
“The federal government recognizes the seriousness of the allegations. The case is being treated with the rigor and speed that situations of potential violence against women require,” the statement read.
The Secom demonstration does not mention the Minister for Racial Equality, Anielle Franco. According to the website Metrópoles, she was also a victim of harassment. Anielle did not comment.
The NGO Me Too Brasil, which deals with harassment complaints, released a statement Thursday saying it has received complaints of harassment against Silvio Almeida. The organization did not present evidence or provide details about the accusations against the minister. In a statement and a video posted on social media, Silvio Almeida says the accusations are false and unproven and that he is a victim of persecution.
