The event organized by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) this Saturday, 7, on Paulista Avenue, was attended by 45,000 people, according to estimates by the Observatory of Political Debate in the Digital Environment, of the University of São Paulo (USP). The demonstration calling for the impeachment of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court Alexandre de Moraes mobilized only a quarter of the public present at the last Bolsonaro act, held on February 25, when 185,000 supporters of the former president attended one of the Paulista postcards of the capital.
The institution’s audience estimates were measured based on the peak time of the demonstration, at 4:05 p.m., when Bolsonaro spoke in a trio with the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republican), federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL) and the event’s organizer, Pastor Silas Malafaia.
The content of the demonstration was the same as the one that took place earlier this year, when a crowd went to Paulista Avenue to support the former president who declared himself “persecuted” by the Federal Supreme Court. However, without Bolsonaro’s ban on the use of banners and posters against the institutions – which occurred in February – the act had a harsher tone. Bolsonaro and his allies from the trio present at the event also made stronger speeches against the minister and also against the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
Bolsonaro accused Moraes of bias and called the minister a dictator
In an emotional speech, the former president recalled the stab he suffered in 2018 and defended, once again, the unproven thesis according to which his victory in the elections that year was the result of a “crack in the electoral system”. Bolsonaro also attacked Minister Alexandre de Moraes, accusing him of conducting the 2022 elections in a “biased” way and of “choosing his targets”. “They, to prevent me from having the possibility of returning, declared my ineligibility,” said the former president.
The event was also attended by Bolsonaro allies, such as Tarcísio de Freitas, who called for amnesty for those arrested for the January 8 coups. Other Bolsonaristas also attended the demonstration and called for everything from the impeachment of Moraes to the arrest of the minister.
How was the estimate measured?
The USP monitor took 72 photos between 2:25 PM and 4:05 PM to arrive at this number. Eighteen photos were selected to cover the width of the demonstration, without overlapping. Each of the photos was divided into 8 pieces. In each part, an implementation of the Point to Point Network (P2PNet)1 method was applied, which identifies heads and estimates the number of people in an image.
The method has a precision of 72.9% and an accuracy of 69.5% in identifying each individual. When counting the audience, the mean absolute percentage error is plus or minus 12% for aerial images with more than 500 people.
