VPN Use Explodes in Brazil After X Ban: 60 Million Users

Whenever a government announces restrictions on the Internet, people turn to privacy tools

Summary

The Twitter ban in Brazil has increased the demand for VPNs, with 60 million Brazilians using these services. Companies like NordVPN are seeing this growth.

The blocking of the social network X (Twitter) in Brazil, ordered by the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, has caused a significant increase in demand for VPN services in the country. NordVPNone of the main providers of this solution, conducted a study that highlights the growth of awareness and use of virtual private networks among Brazilians.

The research also revealed that more than 60 million people use some VPN service, or a third of the country’s population. Security is a key concern: 46% of respondents say they use the service to protect their devices and online accounts. However, the majority turn to free solutions (52.4%), which are less effective, while only 39% pay for VPN providers and 12.2% use corporate services.

Additionally, 35% of respondents cited privacy as a reason for using VPNs. These numbers indicate a growing awareness and adoption of digital security tools in the country, especially in a context of increased surveillance and blockades like the one that occurred with X.

Therefore, the trend is that the use of VPNs will continue to grow, especially in situations where access to information and digital platforms is limited by judicial or government decisions that prevent the population from exercising their right to digital freedom, a fundamental principle that has guided the foundation of the free internet since the dawn of cypherpunks.

“In this turbulent environment, we reaffirm our commitment to digital freedom. Our goal is to provide unrestricted access to the Internet to people around the world. We stand for digital independence, the free flow of information and freedom of expression. Therefore, we will continue to offer our products through available channels around the world,” says Laura Tyrylyte, Global Public Relations Manager at Nord Security.

“We also saw a 426% increase in searches for VPN services in Brazil between August 29 and 31, potentially demonstrating a huge demand for ways to circumvent the ban. Such spikes in VPN demand are not uncommon. Whenever a government announces increased surveillance, internet restrictions, or other types of restrictions, people turn to privacy tools,” Laura concludes.
