It’s official, HPI is back! The second part of Season 4 debuted on TF1 last Thursday, bringing our beloved Morgan back to our small screens. And it’s back in full force with an almost official way of identifying a psychopath. Quite fascinating and somewhat terrifying: we tell you!
In the 30th minute of episode 5 of season 4 of the hit series, Morgan (Audrey Fleurot) and the whole team think they are dealing with a serial killer. The suspect is then questioned. Gilles (Bruno Sanchez) tries to find clues to prove that the suspect is correct. It is then that Morgan begins to scream insistent and then explains to the others, surprised and embarrassed by his attitude, that this is a technique that allows one to identify whether a person is a psychopath or not. Really, if a person doesn’t smile back, they have no empathy… and that’s why they’re a psychopath!
Confused, Gilles notes that no one in the room was smiling, not him, not the suspect, not anyone else: so the test doesn’t seem conclusive.
“OK, one more test, listen carefully! This is the story of a boy who goes to his mother’s funeral. On the way, he meets a girl and kills her father the next day. for what You’ll see, it’s true“- he says later. He is interrupted by Karadek (Mehdi Nebibu), who resumes his interrogation, and Gilles, who continues.
Later, the suspect confesses to something other than murder, and no one, neither the band nor us viewers, will have an answer to Morgan’s famous riddle.
Later, when the heroine believes that she is faced with a real serial killer who is stalking her, she becomes afraid, grimaces, and once again tries to psychologically test the one who puts her in danger: she grunts again, then repeats her story. He gets confused, and once again, the obvious alleged culprit doesn’t respond to his test.

The answer to this famous test – which is therefore not given in the HPI episode – can be found by searching in psychology. J. Reid Malloy, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, talks about this in his book. PsychopathsTells us about an inverted version of Morgana’s Enigma, where this time instead of a man, it is a young woman who kills her own sister instead of her father. If the characters are different, the principle remains the same.
The expected answer at HPI is this: The man in Morgan’s story actually fell in love with a woman he met at his mother’s funeral, and thought that if she attended, he must be related to her parents. That’s why he kills his own father, hoping that the woman will go to his funeral and be able to see him again. They twisted it, didn’t they?
This cold, calculating, and strange reasoning would be the reasoning of a psychopath according to this test, which was used on a large number of serial killers who actually answered the question correctly…
