I’m Still Here, Motel Destino and Heartless are some of the productions selected by the Brazilian Film Academy

The Brazilian Academy of Cinema announced, last Monday (16), the finalists in the dispute for a place to represent Brazil in the 97th edition of the Oscarthe biggest award ceremony in cinema, which takes place in March 2025.

Among the productions are I’m Still Herenew feature film by Walter Salles (Central Brazil), which won the Best Screenplay award at this year’s Venice Film Festival; and Motel Destinoof Karim Ainouz (The Invisible Life), which competed for the Palme d’Or, the main prize at the Cannes Film Festival, held in May.

In total, 12 feature films were registered and qualified to compete for the spot. After a two-round election, the winner among the last six finalists will be announced next Monday, September 23. Below, find out which films are still in the running:

I’m Still Hereby Walter Salles

Based on the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, I’m Still Hereis set in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1970s, amidst the military dictatorship, and tells the story of Eunicea mother of five, who becomes embroiled in an endless search for the truth after her husband, Rubensbe taken away by plainclothes police officers and disappear. City; Countrysideby Juliana Rojas

City; Countryside presents two stories about migration between the city and the countryside. In the first, the rural worker Joana moves to São Paulo after a dam burst floods his hometown, and struggles to survive in the “city of work”. In the second story, we meet Flaviawho moves with his partner, Marato the farm he inherited from his father, and has to deal with frustrations, memories and ghosts. Watch the trailer:

Riseby Lillah Halla

On the eve of a decisive volleyball championship, Sofia17 years old, discovers she is pregnant and, so that the unwanted pregnancy does not interfere with her much desired autonomy, she decides to have an abortion. However, she ends up becoming the target of a fundamentalist group, which is determined to stop her at any cost. But not even Sofia and even those who love her are not willing to surrender to the conservatism and hatred of the herd. Watch the trailer for Rise:

Motel Destinoby Karim Aïnouz

In Motel Destino, Elijah and his frustrated and beautiful wife, Dayanarun a roadside motel. Fleeing from the police and the gang that disappointed them, Herald21, ends up at the place and ends up staying, getting involved with the hosts in a dance of power, desire and liberation. Longing has taken up residence hereby Haroldo Borges

In Longing has taken up residence herewe know Bruno15 years old, who is losing his sight irreversibly. The film deals with the uncertainties of adolescence, amplified by the boy’s imminent blindness, and converts the tragic fate of Bruno in a collective learning report. Watch the trailer:

Heartlessby Nara Normande and Tião

Heartless takes place in the summer of 1996, on the coast of Alagoas, and follows Date enjoying her last weeks in the fishing village where she lives before leaving to study in Brasilia. One day, she hears about a girl nicknamed Heartlessbecause of a scar on his chest, and feels a growing attraction to the mysterious girl. Watch the trailer:
