After the success of Barbie ($1.4 billion at the international box office), Mattel continues to produce movies inspired by its toys. The company recently announced the start of work on a feature film inspired by its Matchbox game line.
Created by Jack Odell in 1953, Matchbox was a brand of small cars. In the 1960s, it was the best-selling children’s car brand in the world. The brand still exists and publishes today, in addition to cars, charts and garages.
The film inspired by these toys will be directed by Sam Hargrave, who owes us the action films Tyler Rake, written by David Coggeshall, screenwriter of Prey and The Family Plan, and Jonathan Tropper, creator of the Banshee series and Warrior. John Cena, who has already made a cameo in Barbie, will star in this feature film. He played actor and former wrestler Ken Tritton.
We still don’t know anything about the pitch of this feature film, but considering the team, it should be an action movie and it should be car racing. A sport in which John Cena trained for the needs of the Fast & Furious saga, in which he played the brother of Dom (Vin Diesel).
Thus, Matchbox joins a long list of cinematic projects planned by Mattel Films: Polly Pocket, Hot Wheels, Uno, Major Matt Mason, a new version of Masters of the Universe with Nicholas Galitzin as He-Man, or even Monster High’s Akiva Goldsman. We remind you that the company has planned 45 feature films adapted from its toy brands.
