WADA is appealing and asking for a suspension of up to two years for Sinner

The world number 1 speaks and is surprised by the appeal

WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency, issued a short warning this Saturday and said it had filed an appeal with CAS, the sports arbitration committee, requesting Jannik Sinner’s doping suspension.

The world’s top doping control body, based in Montreal, has called for the world number 1 to be suspended for one to two years for doping with Clostebol detected in early April. The athlete ended up coming out unscathed, being punished only in the Indian Wells tournament with loss of points and money, and was also able to play in other competitions until the case was discovered on the eve of the US Open, in August.

“The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirms that it has lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Thursday 26 September in the case of the Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, which was examined by an independent tribunal of the International Anti-Doping Agency ( WADA) Tennis Integrity (ITIA) was not at fault or negligent for testing positive twice for clostebol, a banned substance, in March 2024.

WADA believes that the conclusion of “no fault or negligence” was incorrect under the applicable rules. WADA requires a disqualification period of between one and two years. WADA does not intend to exclude outcomes other than those already imposed by the lower court.

As the matter is pending before CAS, WADA will have no further comment at this time.

There is no deadline yet for CAS to analyze this year’s appeal.

Sinner spoke about the appeal after his victory in Beijing this Saturday and expressed surprise: “Obviously I’m very disappointed with this appeal, I was very surprised because we had three hearings throughout the process with the ITIA and all three were “Be positive for me.
