Fabián ‘Tyson’ Caballero dies aged 46 and had a brilliant career in the Libertadores

Fabián “Tyson” Caballero, former Paraguayan player, died this Friday at the age of 46 (27), after suffering a heart attack during a futsal match at the General Genes club, in the Villa Morra neighborhood, Paraguay. He was rushed to Bautista Hospital, where his death was confirmed.

Caballero, nicknamed “Tyson”, has had an illustrious career, with club stints in Argentina and Paraguay. In 1998, he gained notoriety by scoring a goal in the Libertadores semi-final for Cerro Porteño against Ecuador’s Barcelona. Even though the team ended up eliminated on penalties. Thus, Arsenal became interested and signed him on loan for the 1998/1999 season.

At Arsenal, Caballero played just three games for the first team, making his debut on 11 November 1998 in the League Cup. He came on in place of Dennis Bergkamp during the 5-0 defeat against Chelsea. However, the English club did not exercise the purchase option and Caballero tried out at Benfica for the 1999/2000 season, but eventually returned to Paraguay, where he played for Sol de América.

Two years later, he returned to European football to play for Dundee in Scotland. Caballero remained at the club for five seasons (2000-2005), with a brief loan spell at Aberdeen in 2004 and a move to Olimpia, Paraguay, midway through the final season of his contract. Thus, during his career at Dundee, he scored 26 goals in 142 games, being voted the team’s best player in the 2004/2005 season.

Through social media, Arsenal mourned Caballero’s death.

“Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our former player, Fabian Caballero. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time,” read the statement published by Arsenal.
