Netflix has announced a new Stranger Things spin-off series titled Outros Mundos: Uma Aventura Stranger Things, scheduled to premiere in 2028. The streaming platform confirmed the upcoming live-action project on Friday during its annual Stranger Things Day celebration.
The new show will serve as a prequel set during the 1950s, introducing fresh characters and an unexplored era decades before the events of the original television hit.
Original series creators Matt and Ross Duffer developed the project alongside writer Kate Trefry, who will serve as showrunner. British filmmaker Joe Wright, known for directing period dramas such as Pride and Prejudice and Atonement, has been chosen to direct the production.
The announcement took place on November 6, a date observed annually by fans to mark the disappearance of Will Byers, played by Noah Schnapp, which started the original storyline. Netflix also unveiled a teaser video to confirm the new title.
Creative Team and 1950s Setting
In a statement, the Duffer brothers said they had dreamed about Outros Mundos: Uma Aventura Stranger Things for many years, adding that seeing the concept become reality felt surreal and exciting. They explained that the prequel will take a different storytelling approach from the main series.
The creators praised their collaborators on the project, pointing to Trefry, who joined the franchise writing room during the second season and wrote the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow. They also praised Wright, describing him as a brilliant artist whose directing they had admired for a long time.
The brothers promised surprises for viewers while keeping specific plot details secret. They said they could not wait for audiences to see what the team was preparing, describing the production as an innovative entry that keeps the core identity of Stranger Things while introducing a new environment, new heroes, and new villains.
Cutting themselves off before giving away more, the writers stated that they were not allowed to reveal anything else. They added that the team was now moving ahead with casting decisions, telling fans to stay alert for future news.
Prequel Timeline and Filming
Filming for the series will take place in the American state of New Mexico, where Netflix operates extensive production facilities.
The 1950s backdrop places the story before both the original television show and the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow. That theatrical play, which launched in London before moving to international stages, explores the early years of Henry Creel and his transformation into the villain Vecna.
By travelling back to the mid-twentieth century, Outros Mundos will explore a historical period untouched by previous installments in the franchise, shedding light on earlier supernatural mysteries.
Global Success of Stranger Things
Created by the Duffer brothers, Stranger Things debuted in 2016 and developed into a global pop culture phenomenon. The flagship series follows a group of young friends in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, through the 1980s as they confront government experiments, secret conspiracies, and terrifying forces from an alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.
The show has accumulated more than 1.2 billion views across its first four seasons on Netflix. Its fifth and final season achieved the biggest English-language premiere week in the history of the streaming service, taking a spot alongside the fourth season among the most watched releases on the platform.
